a speed painting

as my warmup for the night. Haven't done a self portrait in a loooong time. Not since the 2nd year of college I think. Anyway it shows that I"m a bit rusty at just drawing w/ the tablet pen w/out drawing it in pencil first.

I'm watching Iron Giant as I rev up for an evening of illustration work- it's really a gorgeous animation. The backgrounds are insane! WHY didn't we focus more on backgrounds in college. There should have been a class dedicated to JUST backgrounds.

I can totally see "The Iron Giant" as a lasting inspiration for your work :)

Also, being happy is better for you in the long run than being right. Ultimately right and wrong won't be so important, and being happy helps you live longer, less stress. Compromise!

Also, if you ever get stuck for ideas, illustrate a fairy tale or fable. Those subjects never get old. You see them on shelves every year for a reason! No need to fuss over plot, etc. You'll end up making it your own anyway, good luck!

Lately I've realized that the backgrounds I draw are woefully lame, and I blame it on never really focusing on them before. School may have played a part in this.

Now I want to watch the Iron Giant again.
